As I was out working in the yard today, I heard a thunk from the road, and saw these lying in the middle of the intersection. Must have fallen off a truck going to the scrapper.

They are not small:

Interesting factoids:

-Stupidly heavy (would have been impressive if the dingbat soccer mom staring blankly as I motioned her to look at the road had actually hit one )

-Not much piston skirt below the oil rings

-Piston faces are recessed ~1/2"

-Split shell bearings

So I figure by 8:00 someone will have identified what they came from, probably down to model year, by 9:00 we should know the color and cab configuration...

Go!

Saab 9-5.

You're sure they didn't fall out of YOUR car, right?

Big rig diesel. Caterpillar would be my bet based on skirt design.

I have nothing to add, but when I was in high school, a friend saw something odd in the street and went to go get it. It was a solidified puddle of aluminum about an inch or two in diameter, and it appeared to have landed on the road as a liquid

Those definitely look like diesel slugs. Does a magnet stick to them?
