Im working over a couple of ideas in my head at the moment, and one of them involves a 302 Ford v8.

I can pick up running Ford v8s for $500-1000 locally. But that can be buying an unknown quantity, alot of the time the km's are unknown or deliberately understated. Which means id be considering freshening up anything I bought, and adding more expense.

So, in the interest of weighing up all my options, I feel it's worth considering bringing in a crate or remanufactured engine.

So my question is, where would I find a good deal on such an engine? Id assume summit and jegs are worth a look. Any other leads or ideas?

Ford.

Power level you want to make. ~3000$ or so for a long-block that will make ~400hp with accessories being another 1K.

Already have the injection/cab and all the extra bits, find a mildly worn out block for 500$ on Craigslist and build for ~1.5K locally correctly and bolt it together.

300hp give or take 50. It would be for a lpg powered project.

A standard motor is all I need at this point.

You might want to look up a company called PSI. They make lpg variants of that engine, I believe.

300 on Pain could be done with a GT40P headed F cammed 5.0 with valve work, springs, a good intake and headers.

What chassis is it going in?

I was hearing a lot of bad things about the Ford Racing crate engines, so I went with the refresh my own long block own route. About $3000 Cnd to buy a core, go over the engine with a bore, new pistons, alloy heads, roller rockers and all the other bits and bobs. So like a buck fiddy USd gets you a rebuild.

You answered your own question when you said that Summit and Jegs would have them. You really don't need to look any further for selection or price.

I've bought two GT40p motors now from local salvage yards. One for $300, one for $350. Both were immaculate inside, and have served me well.

If you are doing the building yourself and confideny in your abilities, buy a junkyard motor and build it how you like it. They are normally in decent shape from personal experience.

If your gonna farm it out or are uneasy about a rebuild just buy one with a warranty from a good company.

Ive seen bad stuff out of the mainstream remanufacturers.

Cheers for the responses guys. I figured jegs or summit were probably my best bet for what I'm chasing, but you never know till you ask.

Rebuilding a junkyard engine probably edges out a crate motor once shipping factors in. And as has been mentioned, means I can spec it how I want.

Ford X-302 used to be a screaming deal at around $3K with a recycled block for 345HP, but they charge something like $6K for that now with a new block (I think).

If you're just looking to mate up a carb and an alternator on a crate motor, the other crate companies out seem like a safe way to get a good motor.

I wanted a 302 complete with EFI and transmission for a track car project. I had an acquaintance who tried the same project piecing together a package of used motor and accessories together himself. He could never get it running.

I found a man who had done a nice job refreshing a Foxbody himself to pass the time, but he was tired of it. I bought it from him and sold the roller to a drag car guy once I had pulled out everything I needed.

It ended up costing me what I would have paid for a "freshly pulled" running package out of a high-mile Ford around here, and it's a very clean looking, strong rebuilt motor and T5, solid clutch, useable drive shaft, etc. And I got to drive the Foxbody until I was tired of it, which was a blast.

Explorers.

I believe generally for awaps people want the non p heads. P heads flow better but exhaust optios are limited, so finding a header that will fit a chassis the motor didnt come in can be harder.
