How is this possible?  I pulled the passenger side drain plug in the block to drain all the coolant and switch over from DexCool.  The crush washer was bonded to the plug, and my attempt to separate them resulted in chipping part of the crush washer (which I'll admit I've never seen happen).  So now I need a new plug.  I swung by the local Chevy dealer just before they closed and the parts guy spent about 15 minutes puzzling over his computer.  He came back with the answer that it is discontinued.  Said "the part shows up in the diagram, but there's no number for it, so it's discontinued.  You'll probably have to find it on eBay."  Huh?  Is this possible?  There's only like 8 bajillion LS engines out there.

Strangely, I have yet to find an actual part number anywhere in my searches, including forums.  I've found a few aftermarket sets, but I don't need all of the other ones, just this one.  I know it's M16, fine thread (1.5 I think), brass, 12mm long below the head,  and takes an 8mm allen key.  I guess I can order a similar drain plug, but it still baffles me that GM would discontinue this part.

You have a picture of the exploded parts diagram?  I probably have one hiding somewhere.

I do not.  Passenger side of the block, directly above the starter.  This is on an LS6 in case that makes any difference.

I believe you're correct!  That first one appears to be it.  I did track down a part #, 11588949, but it appears to be the oil gallery plug, which is not brass.

In reply to NorseDave :

When was the last LS1/LS6 made?  More than seven years ago?  (Yep)  There's your answer.

One of the fun bits about a certain 4th-gen F-body that I am working on is that somebody removed and threw out a whole lot of things like wiring subharnesses, clips, brackets, etc. And everything is discontinued, so I have to fabricate everything.  Would have been cheaper at the outset to buy an LS1 car and scrap the engine and chassis after raiding it all for the missing pieces.

Not everything is discontinued. It is probably listed elsewhere like trucks.
