Just saw a video of a LQ4 in a bugeye. With the prices of 2.5 and 2.0 subie engines, I'm thinking when this thing goes (if it does) to just replace it with that and make it rwd and it might be a bit cheaper or same price with merican power and wagon fashion. Hypothetically saying all of this as well. GRM thoughts?

Understeer and broken drivetrain bits.

I happened onto a forum some time ago where a guy adapted a GM 60 degree V6 to a Suby gearbox. I thought it seemed like a decent idea.

Have you seen how small the subaru rear diffs are? Even the STi diff looks like a toy. How much punishment can they really take?

You mean like this one?

2002maniac you are aware that the r180 diffs in the back of higher powered subies is the same as the ones in fast RWD Nissans (240z, 510, 240sx, etc...)? They don't seem to have a problem with V8 power.

Problem with power? Make it an LSx swap along with a Ford 9" rear swap.

I think it and the T56 should fit with minimal surgery, and you would have a Subaru wagon that can wheelie!

I remember awhile back some guy on NASIOC installed a 6.0L LS2 in a Bugeye WRX. It was cool and ran great up until the torque from the LS2 liquified the stock rear differential.

Wedge a IRS 8.8 out of a thundercougarfalconbird in there, problem solved.

IIRC, the guy put in a built R180 back there and it may or may not have also liquified it. A Ford independent rear would probably take it for a bit.

getrag/CTS rear end to replace the subaru one like the miata conversions?

Fit a R200 from a Nissan and you'd be ok... Guys have been puting V8 in Z cars since they were new with good results.

I wouldn't want to make stupid power, but close to 400rwhp would be nice. A STi style rear end would take that abuse? I suppose what the Nissan Z guys run would work well too.

Finally got the car home today as well. For 144k miles, the interior looks brand new, drives pretty decent, just needs new brake rotors and pads.

They understeer in stock form from the engine being so far forward and you want to put an even longer engine in it?

I am going over the swap in my head and it doesnt seem that bad. I have seen several "projects" but only one running swap so I dont know how do-able it is in the real world.

I know the transmission tunnel doesnt need to be cut, but just some pounding with a hammer to make the transmission fit. The driver header would probably clear the steering shaft, but it would be tight. The subframe and carrier would need to be cut and welded. The steering rack would be an issue. The GM motor would be much farther back than the Subaru motor but that is a good thing. The Subaru gauges and throttle are all stone age so that isnt a big deal. A rear R230 or R200 diff would work.

I just wish there was an aftermarket ECU option for the GM turbo high feature V6 engines.

EDIT: Are there any drive by cable options for the newer GM V6 engines?

with as infinitely tunable as gm pcm's are i don't see the need for aftermarket. get engine with harness and computer, prune harness and tune as necessary. even bolt a gm dbw throttle pedal in like guys are going with newer ls swaps.

i want an impreza wagon that makes the noise that the drift one does.

If it has been done before it means it's possible. May not be easy but I'd rather drop $2-3k into a LSx engine tranny than $2-3k just for an STi engine then additional $ for a tranny. She rarely drives anyway so downtime wouldn't be an issue if this project came about.

At that point, why not just get a CTS?

I forgot about the E-Rod crate engines. Is the same technique available with the DI v6s? I really like the packaging and power of the newer gm v6, but I don't know anything about the engine management or what is reasonably feasible. The 16 bit Subaru ECM is so dumb that I KNOW that I could run it with a force pass to prevent it from throwing codes. But I don't know enough about GM engine management.

To be honest I love the new Ford v6s but there doesn't seem to be much development or aftermarket.

Which has a better interior, a CTS wagon or the Subaru? Is that worth the $30k higher price you'll be paying over just doing the swap?

quick search and Mustang 3.7L V6 are about the same as an STi engine as well...GM 4.8/5.3 still cheaper option.
