But more seriously, my friends M20 into a 2002 swap with a bit of rust repair, e21 steering rack swap, new wiring harness and some other cool things. After a year of him part collecting we tore into it last Sunday.

The swap starts on page 34, but all of it is worth a read. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=146243

Looks good so far. But an M20? I'm assuming it was really cheap?

Thanks!

The M20 was free, and then rebuilt and cammed. Right around 200hp/2000lbs said and done. Doesn't add much weight to the front and fits in place with minimal mods. What's to hate?

No hate (I have one). Just wondering and figured it was a budget decision vs. something more powerful or rev-happy/lighter.

Any specifics about what was done to the engine? Costs? There's still a slight chance I'll keep my E30 and say "eff-it" with keeping it original and go Street Mod.

Yes budget driven. I got a free parts car a while back and my friend had mostly finished his suspension build so the natural thing to do was throw the M20 in. Nothing in the head is original apart from the rockers. Polished chambers, mild porting, 272 cam and every wear item and gasket replaced. The bottom end is all original. The goal is a fun old-school car to track and autocross with the eventual goal of a hill climb car while keeping it all BMW.

Sure an s14 would be the hot ticket, but as it stands he's bellow the cost of a junkyard S2000 motor, and won't need to replace anything for a long time. And when the boost bug bites, it's well-proven territory.
