Hey all,
In case you missed it, I'm going through a '08 Forester. I've never even pulled an engine before, so I'm slightly out of my depth. I'm considering taking the heads to a shop to have them checked out just for some peace of mind.
Does anyone have any recommendations? There are a lot of local places, but I don't know which if any have Subaru experience, or if that even matters. I'm in Richmond CA, so somewhere around Oakland/Berkeley/Richmond would be most convenient.

Hmmm, Norman Racing/Dennis Etcheverry is the best, but you pay for the privilege. I used to take my stuff to Titos Machine in Berkeley, which was then bought by Wise Autotech. They might be OK but I'm not sold. I haven't used them, but Star Machine in Emeryville is supposed to be pretty good.
Try Yelp. There are a few but I haven't used them yet
I don't have anything helpful to add, but I do have this great meme:
these guys are doing Subie conversions to Vanagons,
they probably know a good shop

Thanks for the suggestions (and other less helpful comments too)!
I dropped them off at Star machine today, he's right around the corner from work so that's very convenient. Does a lot of Subarus, so hopefully they come back perfect!

Cool. Let us know how it goes. I work a mile or two from there so PM if you want to hang.

Nice! My company is kinda spread out, but I mostly work over by the Amtrak station and across the street from the (former) broken rack. Definitely up for grabbing a drink sometime.
