whats the point of this thing? the one in my mazda is more restriction than anything else in the entire air intake tract. I can see it being useful in the event of a catastrophic air filter failure to keep big chunks from breaking the wires, but other than that? it doesn't appear to straighten any flow, direct anything, etc. just create mucho restriction.

The MAF screen is actually pretty important part to help guide air flow across the sensor.. With out it, the sensor can become uncalibrated and cause drivability issues..
