Talked to a friend who is a motorcycle cop for the Sheriff's department this week end. They give him a number he must write. He can write them all in 5 minutes or stretch them out over a week, but he must write a certain number.

He wouldn't tell me the number, but said it was a reasonable number.

Not a quota by having the Sarge come out and say, "..you've all got to write x many tickets today!.." But yes, they have to stay in the thick of the "bell curve" of what *all* officers write to stay in Sarge's good graces (like Ojala said, to preserve perks..and since they don't make much money, those perks are *important*...less dangerous areas to patrol, opportunities to "moonlight"). It's complicated. Again, I am not an LEO...just know a bunch of em, and living with a cop's daughter. You wanna know embarassment? Try getting pulled over by your g/f's dad. Damn, I'm so happy that man got promoted..

I think it depends on where you are talking about. I've lived in my town for over 20 years and have NEVER seen a cop using a radar or lazar or anything to catch speeders. They just don't do it. So obviously they also don't have a quota. I mentioned a few other cities in a previous post where I know don't have quotas. I'm sure other places do, but I don't think you can't make a blanket statement about it either way.

Yeah, there's a lot to be said for that, as well. That little town I lived in in Mississippi never seemed to pull people over for speeding, they left that to the State Patrol. They would pull people for out-of-date plates & improper use of signals, though.

Any GRM advise for selecting a radar detector to stick in a RX8. I have allays been told that if a cop pulls you over and you have a detector that you will end up with a ticket. I tend to do quite a bit of speeding in the boonies around my house sometimes. So far i have none though.

I work in law enforcement. In fact I am sitting in my crappy rental car with lights that my department chose to call a police car (05 Impala) as I write this.

We don't have a quota. I wrote a total of 48 tickets last year, of which 80% came from crashes. My car doesn't have a radar and in fact my calibrated speedometer didn't work for 3 months, but it didn't really matter because I don't like writing tickets.

Now some officers like to write tickets and will write five to ten a night. They normally end up as traffic units. They don't have quotas either but if you populate your traffic units with people who are overzealous and like writing tickets you don't need them.

The previous statement about making your Sarge and LT happy is pretty much spot on. The thing is they know if you are working without counting tickets or reports etc.

For the most part I stay pretty busy babysitting the ignorant people who populate my beat... It is amazing how some people live. I never would have belived it until I had this job.

Get a Valentine 1, thats what I have. It is worth the extra money.

Your attitude plays a bigger part in determining if you get a ticket then having or not having a radar detector.

If you put the cop at ease and are polite it goes a long way. Also don't lie, they know why they pulled you over, claiming that you were not speeding or playing dumb is counter productive.
