There's already suggestions for the interior, I'm going to suggest exterior.
If you're building a new garage, my suggestion is to make it Craftsman Style:
Then throw a vintage British Petrol Pump out front.
With rare exception, these 'fantasy garages,' while cool, look like they never have any work done in them. And I imagine there's a reason for that.
I'm surprised nobody's posted our favorite DIY garage with the nice Porsche and equally-droolworthy in-floor lift.

I always thought the decor of the garage is tools, parts, projects, junk, at least a few things to trip over, etc. I actually cleaned out my garage last week to finish rebuilding my motorcycle.
Some of those garages look all show and no go. If you don't have various stains on the floor you aren't doing it right. Those look like more of hang out than work area.
