Around 1993 or 1994, was there anything Mazda was doing wrong in the USA outside of the rebadged Ranger and Explorer?

Depends on your definition.
In 93, the 1.6 Miata was still around, but that was fixed in 94.
Also, while i LIKE the 2nd gen MX6, i don't think i'd ever own one. That engine bay is a clusterberkeley and as far as i'm concerned, pretty much unserviceable until you remove all the extra bullE36 M3 that it doesn't need in order to run.
I don't know that there's enough there to call it "wrong," though.
In reply to Swank Force One:
If that's your list of wrong, I'd say things were going pretty well. 323 and Protege at the bottom, Miatas and the FD RX-7, the 929 was looking awesome, the 626 was redone and looking great for the times (and I think they're pretty reliable cars to this day)...
Ah well. At least we're entering what may be another good Mazda period where the cars loose smiley faces and they're doing good stuff with fuel economy with a little performance here and there.
I suspect OP is currently formulating a plan for NOT allowing us to liberate him of his checkbook on this one.
