Very interesting.  It looks like the idea is increased efficiency by running the intake ports on one side and the exhaust port on the other, AND using a peripheral exhaust.  Turbocharging also appears to be inherent to the design.

I find it funny they bother with the patents. No other company besides Mazda is crazy enough to try rotary.

Audi is dusting off the NSU books and working on a small Wankel as use for an under-trunk APU for a series hybrid.  Perfect application for it, actually, since no matter the design they do not really tolerate low load/idle, and they are horribly inefficient there too.  But a small 30-40hp engine whose job it is merely involves turning a generator?  Perfect.

 

They are also used for UAVs.  Here's a startup demonstrating a hand-started UAV engine that runs on heavy fuel... implication: you can run your drones on military-cut Diesel and deploy them with minimal support hardware.
