The FRS does start at $27.5 MSRP. There's a definite price difference, but it's $4500, not $12k when you compare base models.
Interestingly, the FRS starts at $26,500 in the US. So Scion set their prices when the dollars were close to par, and have not significantly changed the MSRP in Canada since.

Thanks for the clarifications on Canadians and Canadian base MSRP's!
So it was an optioned up Miata vs base FRS. The longer the options list, the quicker the price can climb. Just look at MINI's...or Porsche's if you're brave enough.
Then I am missing something. As I mentioned, the NC Miata was on the list when I was looking for a car. No way, No how, was I going to get anything with a Miata badge out of the showroom for less than 40k all in. FRS was 32 all in. I got the same impression from talking to the salesperson this time. No way No how do you get out of here with a Miata for less than 45k all in.
Bottom line, a Miata is not worth 45k to me. The good news is that depreciation will fix that just fine. If they are going to price like SLK they are going to depreciate like SLK!
You've also illustrated that the guy you talk to is pretty clueless about selling cars. He's looking to sell what he has on the lot, not find you the right car for your needs.

Miatas have always been relatively expensive in Canada.
That's why Keith Tanner had to come here. Miatas are too expensive up north.

You might be on to something. At one time we had 6 Mazdas in the family but the last time we all went to buy they kind of sent us away.
Might also be a case of they know they can sell everything they get, so not a big deal if some people walk. Never begrudge a company a profit, that is what its all about.

Solution: come to Guelph. When my parents were looking at their current car, they were looking at all kinds of mazdas and found the team there courteous and well informed.
