Weren't they paired with team joest? Isn't joest like one of the winningest teams in endurance racing?

Multimatics was involved in setting up the Global MX5 Cup chassis, so there's already an existing relationship there.
Plus Multimatic helped build/develop the car in the first place.

The other article I saw said their agreement with Joest was due to expire after Sebring, which is obviously postponed, which means it expires now.

I just don't understand why they would sign that type of deal in the first place, or which side didn't want to renew. Joest got the best results that car has ever had.
Multimatic already had increasing involvement with Mazda last year further developing the car and Larry Holt taking over as race engineer. That's where their 2019 wins came from and being able to last the Daytona 24 this year. I'm sure AER stepped up engine development too.
I don't know what happened to Joest. In their first race with Mazda they forgot how to fasten wheels and later races had bad pit strategy. Speedsource had as many podiums their 2017 half season as Joest did for all of 2018.
