There’s no clear indication of whether or not the hard top will actually be an option anytime soon...of course, the hardtop could always just end up an option outside of North America. That would be sad!

And you thought the NA hard tops were getting expensive.... just wait till they release a limited batch of these things on the market. My projection is that in 20 years, these carbon hard tops will be so rare, and so expensive, that only the three richest men in China can own them

NA hardtop are getting cheaper. They’ve always cost about the same in dollars, but inflation means that the actual cost is dropping. The average quality is probably falling, though, as stancebros and rallycrossers choose to rattle can or plastidip them instead of a proper repaint.
Mazda offered both a removable hardtop and a power top for the NC. The former was a compete sales disaster - there’s still a warehouse full of them. I would be quite surprised to see this unit go into production.
That said, I have seriously considered taking a splash of the RF top...

I wish na/NB hard tops were easy to find reasonably in the south east. The past couple I have seen on cl have gone for $1200+.
It's one of the reasons I am no longer considering a na/nb for rallycross. Since it has to be an OEM Mazda top. Though per the fasttrack for rules for 2019 you can now run MR if you have a hard top that is the same size/weight/build of the OEM top if you run a scca approved cage or roll bar.

While I'm sure they weren't the sales success Mazda might have hoped, I think the "warehouse full of" NC hard tops is no longer quite so full. Miata.net has threads of people looking for hard tops and Mazda saying they're out of black, and only have a couple in other colors left.
NA/NB hardtops were an expensive option when new, and really expensive to buy separately from the car. So they were never really common. They’re difficult to find anywhere, and $1200 is what you should expect to pay pretty much anywhere for a nice one. And yes, I know there are outliers where somebody found one for $1.25 or something, but over the last 28 years or so they seem to have averaged right about the same dollar amount.

The "warehouse" was a quote from a Mazda insider just recently. I've not seen these Miata.net threads because I don't tend to hang out in the body mods forums. I can see how demand for them might go up as the cars go out of production. When you're buying a new car, you choose the PRHT instead of the removable top. But if you're buying used, then putting a different top on a certain car makes more sense. They're also more roll bar friendly, which starts becoming a factor as the cars age and become track toys. PRHTs are very roll bar unfriendly.

There was also the Abarth 124 GT with special gray paint, OZ wheels and carbon fiber hardtop. We didn't get them, I don't believe.

That looks so good. Much better than the normal one for some reason.
It balances out the big nose. The 124 is really sensitive to angles when you're taking pics.
There's a better than even chance that the Fiat hardtop will bolt to the Miata. The only place they might vary is right around the periphery at the rear.

Quick google for the NC hardtop, first listed price i saw was 5000$!!!! For just the oem hardtop. They look good but HOLY CRAP im not paying more for the top than i am for the whole vehicle.

I can ask $57,855 for my E82, it doesn't mean anyone is actually paying that.

If you keep using that sort of logic, the amount of money you can spend on upgrades and maintenance keeps dropping until you start to figure the cost of a tank of gas versus the value of the vehicle.
I think of it more in terms of personal value. One specific part equaling the cost of the vehicle is pretty lopsided, though. Especially if its $5,000 part for a $5,000 car and not a $600 part going on a $600 beater.

I've seen a few NA/NB hardtops show up at the local salvage yards, attached to Miatas of course, for $500. Just a few years ago they were just $50. To put that into perspective other items (sort of) like doors, trunks, hoods etc are all still $50. The Mercedes SL removable hard tops are also $500 now. It's amazing that you can purchase a whole motor from the salvage yards for $200-$300 and an entire vehicle for a few hundred yet a removable hard top is $500. Crazy.
