weirdest one I ever heard...
maybe the spiders do like cars that go "zoom zoom"
Think they can rename the miata the "mazda spider"?
Just saw that one too. Bizarre.
Still, it's gotta be better than stuck throttles, spontaneous combustion, or electrocution-prone ignition switches.

For me, the spiders would be more dangerous than any of those. I'm a big bob costas when it comes to spiders.
I am sure this tangled web of a recall was something that only the lawyers can unravel.
Sorry could not resist.
The only logical explanation for this is that those spiders were there from the source. There must have been an infestation at the factory where those canisters were stored before assembly. You'd think someone would have noticed that.
If I had a mechanical fault that I had discovered on my own and had a simple fix, I would concoct a story like this to have people bring the car back without reflecting poorly on my product.
The spider has enough of a shudder factor with the general public that if is likely to have a high subscription rate.
I'm positive there are more than a few people who called their local dealership and told them to come and get the car, because they would not step foot in a car INFESTED with spiders--even though they haven't seen any...Now is there ever was a company car for a RAID rep to have...
This is nothing new. I was a service manager for a Mazda/VW dealer a while back (1998/2000), at that time it was fairly common on Miatas which didn't get driven very much. There was a small plastic screen which popped into the tank vent line so the critters couldn't get in. That was never a recall, only a TSB.
I just listened to an interview about this on CBC radio- they called Mazda and talked to a public relations guy who really should get a raise. The announcer asked why the spiders seemed to like this particular model of car, and his response was, "Well, your question might be better answered by a spider expert than by a lowly public relations guy, but I think its because the spiders just like a car thats really fun to drive."
I laughed.
