You want the 2.3L!
Sure. I'm not familiar enough with those motors to make a real judgement as to which is actually better, so I went with the newer/bigger one.
Though I can say that in the 2, I would honestly prefer the N/A 2.3L to the turbo. 150 ft-lbs in that car would be fun and something you could push on the street a little bit. 280 lb-ft and it's too fast to be fun anymore unless you're on track.
IIRC, there is no NA 2.3L, the 2.0/2.5 are NA and the 2.3 is turbo.
That said, what's the estimated weight of this thing? 280lb ft in my Speed 3 isn't enough even for DD duties.
I'm seriously considering the new Cobb AP that was released last week.
There most certainly is an N/A 2.3L. It was the base engine in the 3 for the last 3 or 4 years (after they dropped the 2.0) and it's what's still used in the 5.
IIRC = If I remember correctly, no need for the "there most certainly blah blah" Sorry for not paying attention to the boring engines, sheesh.
I was just going off buying our cars last year, the 3 was available with a 2.0/2.5 NA OR a 2.3T in the Speed.

Why is the Fiat 500 Abarth esse esse not here yet?!?!
The Abarth is supposed to debut early next year. I don't know if the US will get an EsseEsse kit but the USDM Abarth is said to be more powerful than any of the Euro versions anyways.

The Mazda2 weighs about 2300lb. And yes, you do want a Cobb AccessPort for your Speed3.

this man speaks the truth.
i was making around 280-290 at the wheels in mine, and honestly it was too much for DD duties. i was going through front tires at an alarming rate, and unless on a perfect surface first and sometimes second gear were just wheelspin.
the cobb AP/Accesstuner Race is great because even when you're modded up you can still build a low boost map so you're not burning up a set of front tires every 10k miles just driving back and forth to work. i think they have on the fly map changes now, so if you want to go have some fun you can just switch over to a higher performance map if you want to go have some fun.
I keep reading esse esse as "eat eat."
Wait till Ford puts the ECo Boost 1.6 in the Fiesta.
Or the new Focus ST looks pretty good.
Had to put my boost in for the domestics.

This is supposed to be 1.8, or 1.4 turbo powered with 6 spd. manual.
Still a 4 door, but at least they try to hide it a bit.
A step in the right direction, IMO
What's that supposed to weigh? With 136hp from the 1.8 and 138hp from the 1.4, weight might be the determining factor as to how lively it is to drive.
No weight listed (TBD) , but dimensions are almost the same as the Fiesta. No weight listed in Ford's website for the Fiesta, either.

That sounds like a really expensive version of something i built with one button and a solenoid.
I totally agree about there being 'too much' for having certain kinds of fun with.
Looks like a mazdaspeed2 already has a whole bunch of competetion that we can't have here in the states. Still, 200hp in that size of car has got to be darn fun.

But that's the issue; manufacturers outside the US really do offer hot-hatches for sport-oriented drivers. In the market here, ummm, not so much.
Car companies are battling for market-share, but ignore a segment that could boost sales and prestige. Until the companies (and their bean-counters) want to explore the void, we'll continuing suffering their loss of imagination and innovation.

does your solenoid also adjust fuel and timing to knock down 30+ mpg on low boost too?
Parroting an earlier poster, I don't get why they don't just drop a lightly breathed-on 2.5 NA in there. With its lighter weight, they don't need a lot of torque, and that motor can easily be built to 200 HP. Keep your turbos to yourself. That's plenty of power for 98 percent of us.

iirc, that was the original plan for the mazdaspeed3, 200-220hp 2.3l, but then the figured out how much power they could get from it with the turbo and the rest is history

I don't have any actual numbers, but in that recent GRM comparison of Mazda2, CRZ, and whatever else was there, the reason they gave for not using the Fiesta was that it was heavier than the Mazda2 despite being on the same platform...

You're all so close, but not quite there. The engine you want in the mazdaspeed 2 is the 2.0 MZR with the hotter cams and pistons from the Miata. 170hp in a free-revving engine. It would be the best EF/EG Civic Si ever off the showroom floor.

The Fiesta weight IS listed under specs.
My SE sedan weighs 2537 lbs according to my title.
The 2 is supposed to be lighter and the diference in engine output makes the performance about the same.
Now put the 2.O ecoboost in the Fiesta would be extreme but the 1.6 is in existance, just not here yet.

Where?
I looked on both US, and Canadian sites.

Not a MazdaSpeed2 question, but a Mazda2 question, I have been all over the Mazda web site, does anyone know if the mazda2 comes with Cruise control standard?
It is a deal breaker :)
I second the call for a 2.0L MZR powered MS2, considering all the expertise they have extracting power out of it in Miatas. and... the BP Mazda Lola LMP2 cars ran turbocharged MZRs, and they made something to the effect of 450hp (?) so a really obnoxiously hot MS2 might not be that hard to come up with it might be hard to fit enough tire to hook up that kind of power without making the car look like a rebadged WRC/Pikes Peak spec Fiesta, but it would be possible.
Strizzo wrote:

I don't understand the need to have a different low boost map for fuel economy. If the car is tuned well, it should knock down the same fuel mileage with throttle controlled boost, now? Now, certainly the driver will need some self restraint. Perhaps that's where my logic goes awry.
End OT. ;)
A Mazdaspeed2 (non-turbo) would very likely become my next commuter car if the TDi goes pear-shaped.
