MS-I running (attempting to anyway) fuel only original code. I bought the unit used but it was in working condition, would communicate with megatune, etc... Didn't have a stim though. A very kind board member lent me his stim to get it up and running and learn the whole system. This was before the challenge. Challenge has come and gone and I never got the car up and running despite much help from the likes of Kevin, Jonny, and many others. Car is now ready to run (fixed fuel line and starter issues). I'm attempting to get a base map set up but having some odd issues.

Here's what i know: -stim (V2, not 2.1) is powered from a wal-wart ac adapter with about 15.5v in

-board seems to be regulating it fine as i'm getting the correct ~5v in the right places on the cpu board and on the stim.

-when powering up the two of them together, i get no LED's on either. only way i've gotten anything to light up at all is jumping the pinhole on the stim that's next to r3, to r3 (did it on accident at first) which causes the INJ2 LED on the stim to light.

-all comms tests come back good

-board will take a firmware flash with no problems.

-supplying the power to pins +28 and -15 respectively gives the same readouts in megatune.

-under neither condition will the realtime display in megatune show the cpu clock counting up.

-i have completely uninstalled an reinstalled megatune (a few times)

-no response to adjusting any of the pots on the stim

-megatune doesn't just show nothing for sensor values, but rather holds at steady but arbitrary values when the MS is powered.

-screen captures of both megatune and the realtime display below

i've done a lot of searching around on the msefi boards and through the various manuals but i'm getting a little overloaded and lost. suggestions on what to do next? should i try to replace the crystal? would the cpu still be able to take a firmware flash but then not have the clock circuit function? i posted a thread to the msefi boards here but at this point I don't see how it could be a megatune issue, especially with the lack of responses from the stim/MS.

What version of the firmware do you have? Did you set up Megatune to recognize that version of the firmware?

go over to msefi.com and post, hopefully matt cramer from DIYAutotune.com will see your post and comment, he helped us find a burned diode in about a dozen posts...

Matt Cramer is MadScientistMatt on this board.

BlueJ- you forgot to mention it is a bike motor.

Did you remove the jumper required to flash the firmware? Otherwise known as the boot jumper? Also make sure the CPU is oriented properly. As you noted, without the incrementing count in megatune, your CPU likely isn't running.

I should have known that...

v2.2, sorry. already posted on the msefi board, as linked in the first post. i can power off the board, insert boot jumper, power up, flash the firmware for original code, power off, remove jumper, and power back up and nothing changes. cpu is oriented properly. when opening megatune, i pick the ms1 original code option and make sure it all matches in the configurator.

it seems like the cpu is trying to run but instead of counting, just hangs. any more ideas? i tried the whole shebang on a different computer to see if it might be some sort of weird cable issue, but same thing happened with the same exact random sensor values.

Let me know what firmware version you are running, and what gauges are and aren't reading anything on the realtime display. I'll get back to you with what to check next.

Thank you so much Matt.

I am running MSI "original code" firmware.

all the gauges are reading "something" but none of them make any sense. o2, batt voltage, and IAC are all spiked to the top.

only other thing i can find is that when checking the power at pin 20 on the cpu from grounds at pins 2, 19, and 32 is that i'm getting between 4.6-4.7v instead of the quoted 4.9-5.1v spec. the other voltage checks at the processor pins are within that spec, being at about 4.91-4.96v.

holy crap! finally some life!

just tried reflashing the firmware again but using the hyperterminal to do it. i used the .s19 file from THIS location with megatune from THIS location.

ok, so the MS responds to the stim for all pots except RPM. RPM reads 0 in megatune as does PW.

success!! matt reminded me to jumper xg1 and xg2 and she's working great with the stim. thanks for looking everyone!

Matt has bailed me out too. For that reason alone I have bought all of my MS related stuff from DIYAutotune.

This will not be my last megasquirted vehicle and I'll be using them for all future purposes as well

this might be a bad crystal, I have a spare board with the same issue, just havn't taken the time to troubleshoot it

i figured that probably wasn't the last i'd see of the issue, but i'm ok with it for now. if (when) it comes up again, i'll update this thread with if a crystal replacement fixes it.

The stim sure comes in handy for troubleshooting the initial startup pains, huh? Just imagine doing that on a car instead of with the stim and having that many more variables that you doubted. Glad you got it working, did you try it on the car yet?!

Yeah, this thread is the reason I bought a Stim about half way through my build. Too many folks told me it was worth the extra few $$ for me to ignore them!
