A Datsun 1200 is 1500lbs and fitted with a Nissan A15 will easily make 100 whp. Nissan used their A-series motor until 2007 in various vehicles worldwide.
Contrary to urban myth Nissan A-series is not a BMC copy, it's a 5 main bearing motor with alloy head and weighs a whooping 190lbs. My race engine is 172lbs complete with oil and the stock gear box is 38lbs. A 5 speed overdrive box is about 54 pounds.
The stock bottom end will rev to 9000 rpms, the top end needs nothing more than a set of dual valve springs, the stock push rods, rockers etc will tolerate huge revs as well. I rev my car to 8200 on a regular basis without issue. My motor is making around 105-110 whp and I have $2300 into it (that's everything including the flat slide carbs header bigger valves etc). Note the A15 I picked up unbeknownst to me sat with water in the sump and ended up needing $350 of extra machining.
My car is 1674lbs; I have a way overbuilt roll cage, roadster rear axle, 280ZX struts, race seat on passenger side for students and it's still all stock sheet metal. If I'd built it with weight as a priority rather than things I could buy cheap I could have easily shed another 75-100lbs. It's possible to get a street 1200 just to under 1500lbs.
On Datsun 1200.com we have several members with Spridgets and Morris Minors who've fitted Datsun engines, it's fairly common and a nice upgrade.

I'm going to say Toyota 4AGE with sidedraft Webers. A T50 gearbox will bolt up and you'll be set. I have a couple 4AGEs that I wouldn't mind rebuilding for you. The one in my MR2 has been running perfect since its rebuild in 2005. Dead reliable. Lightweight flywheel and some cams make a world of difference.
