I need to install a battery cut off switch on a friend's Spec-Miata race car this week. I bought a four post cutoff and routed the main cable from the battery through the main posts on the shutoff. I assume the main cable heads directly to the starter, but I'm not sure. It took almost 2 hours to get the main cable out as far as the shifter because of the clips, electrical tape, and plastic insulation around the cable. Does it indeed go directly to the starter motor? I also need to interrupt the power coming out of the alternator in order to kill the motor if it is running. I was surprised to see that the large diameter wire attached to the alternator didn't go directly to the starter. It disappears back into the wire loom and heads behind the engine. Normally I would just run that wire to the other two posts on the shutoff, but now I'm confused. Am I missing something? Where do I cutoff the power the alt is making while the car is running? The whole purpose of the shut off is so that the corner workers can kill all of the power with one switch. No good if the motor keeps running because the alt is still generating current to fire the plugs.

Oooh, it's been a while since I unwrapped that harness. The fat wire running down the transmission tunnel is the main battery line, running from the battery to the starter. There are some splits and splices once you get up near the engine bay, though.

The big alternator wire ends up at the fuse box, I think. White with a green stripe? Might be best if you check with the Spec Miata guys, they do this on a regular basis.
