I finally got around to cleaning the engine bay of my new to me 1999 Miata. It wasn't super filthy, but I wanted to get it cleaned nonetheless. First I coated all of the connectors with WD-40, per my mechanic's recommendation. Then I did a 50% Simple Green and 50% water mix in a spray bottle and wet down the engine bay completely. I let it sit for a few minutes and then used a pretty soft brush to agitate the worst grime. Overall, I'm happy with the results!

Then, a short drive to heat up the engine bay. While drying off the remaining water, I found these plugs. What are they for?

The white 4 pin connector in second photo looks like cruise control.

What's not working? SRS light on dash? Fog lights? Cruise as stated by Doc Brown? Pull up a wiring diagram

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking the red one is for optional fog lights that are not installed and I think the cruise is a good bet. Our ex-salvage guy would know them all.

Cruise control. The car had one which was removed early in its CSP career. Not sure about the red one. It was never connected.

Thanks for the answers. Cruise makes sense. No lights on the dash, so none of the plugs were concerning. Just trying to learn the car.

Buy a service manual and a magnifying glass. All your answers are there in the wiring diagram, and it's super fun to read!!!

Self destruct mechanism. Don't worry, they always stop at "one".

I just recently cleaned my engine bay with a water/dawn mixture, but no brushing of anything (generally works well for me...). Yours came out better.

And, I had water leak in to the number 3 spark plug hole. Car would run funny from time to time, so put the old code reader on it (thanks son! He has one, I don't...) and it was "general misfire, cylinder 3".
