Miata IS the answer. Thanksgving morning, 37 degrees, heated seats, blah, blah, blah. I love my wife's new (to us) 2008 MX5. The folding hardtop means the top will go down more frequently and the car is an absolute blast to drive. If I can build the old TR6 to be this much fun to drive, I will have succeeded.
How can I determine if this car has the "Suspension Package?" Will the shocks say Bilstein on them? The car is a 6 spd, Grand Touring. Other than the shocks and the limited slip, any other differences? The car does have DSC.
Nice shot!
Easiest way to tell is if the shocks are yellow. I don't recall if all GT models came with them, I just look in a wheel well BTW, you can do a lot to improve the ride and handling by changing to a better shock, they're underdamped.
Thanks Keith. I will take a look tonight.
Recommendations on new shocks that won't destroy the great ride? Can I change springs and lower it an inch without getting a jarring ride?
I am making sure she takes good care of it for when she hands it down to me...
We traded her Mini Cooper S in on the Miata. We really loved the Mini, but at 80k miles it was already nickle-and-diming us to death.
Gotta love a woman who loves performance cars and puts up with a gearhead husband and his project cars.
Watch out for women like that, it's a slippery slope. Mine now considers anything with less than 400 hp to be underpowered. After all, even her MG is in that ballpark. Makes it tough to find a high-efficiency commuter for her. Even the Focus ST got denigrated due to low engine output.
Anyhow...
My favorite shock for the car is the Tokico HTS. A bit of a pain to adjust in the rear, but they work well with both stock and aftermarket springs. It probably shouldn't be a surprise that my preferred spring is the FM spring set - we developed them to ride really well and bump the handling up a couple of notches. I've driven that setup 2000 miles solo in two days and was quite happy with the ride quality.
By the way, I spent this weekend in an NC Miata. Such a good car.
I love the NCs, haven't been able to drive one yet though.
It's making me wonder if I should skip some of the other planned mods for the NA, and just drive it for another season, sell, then pick up a high mileage/project type NC..........
It's funny, we were all kind of hard on the NC when it was new, but I'm digging the one we have this week as a test car. My parents love their NC, too. (We're a three-Miata family.)
It's definitely worth trying one. The big difference to me is how they feel - an NA feels faster than it is, an NC is faster than it feels.
Hate to completely de-rail the thread on page 1, but out of curiousity, do the NC engines respond well to the typical I/H/E + tune?
Maybe once the ND Miata's come out the price will really drop on the NCs.....
There's a big chunky cat in the header, so pulling that out can help. They don't pick up huge power with typical breathing mods but it's worth 10% or so.
Yellow shocks on the Miata so I am assuming it has the "suspension package" and a LSD!!
I've had a lot of fun cars ( GTI, 5.0 Mustang, NA Miata, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the Capri) but this Mazda delivers the most smiles per mile of any so far
WARNING: If you've never had a convertible, don't buy one. You'll never want to go without having a ragtop after that!
