Re: rods.  I was under the impression that the 2.5s all had forged rods and the 2.0s all had powedered metal.

Apparently there is a "stock casting rule" engine that will do silly amounts at the crank with a stock 2.3 crank, 2.5 block, and 2.0 direct injected head... along with better pistons, rods, cams, intake, and such.  But no porting smiley

No. All the 09+ 2.0L's have forged rods. Source: https://www.miata.net/faq/brochures/2010/specs_MX5.pdf

Also according to this the 2.5L rods/crank are cast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_L_engine Which makes sense, since it was literally never put into a performance application (the 2.5L that is).

I was speaking of all Duratec/MZR.  Interesting that Miatas got forged rods.  Too bad that Miata engines are like $2000+ while Focus engines are $300.

That Wikipedia page is... interesting.  It used to say the exact opposite of what it does now.

True, but the point is when you buy a miata it comes with one pre-installed even ;)

This thread is making me want an NC Miata again. I love they way they drive and I fit in one without any issues.

But the downside is that you have an NC, which is both expensive and even more rust prone than an NA.  Not that NAs are cheap, good ones are climbing to the $5-7k mark around here, but they also aren't huge.

LS swap? laugh

Well, the great thing about stock rods, be they cast or forged, is that they're basically invincible in the stock rpm range unless you detonate on top of them. And there's no detonation problem that is solved by stronger rods. So....

I'd probably take the 2.5! The whole concept really ups my desire for an NC, which has always fallen into a weird spot of being substantially less cool than a same-price boxster which is less cool than the 996 i already had. But a cheap enough NC with a 2.5 and other mods is, in my mind, finally 'its own thing'. That means nothing to anyone else.

Makes a great GT. In fact, there's at least one person at FM who prefers the LS swapped NCs to the LS swapped NDs. He's wrong of course, but it's that close wink

NCs are rust prone?

I don't think I would call them rust prone, but both 06s I've owned have had rust. However anything thats 13yrs old and parked outside is bound to have rust. Atleast here in MO.

Neither of my ‘06s have a speck of rust anywhere on them.

In reply to z31maniac :

I thought the NCs had problems with the front of the car falling off (more or less) because Mazda engineered in a great moisture trap by putting cardboard reinforcements in the chassis rails.

I didn't know about that one! I had an '06 from early 2013 to late 2014, and it was clean as whistle. But it also a Texas car that had something like 29k miles on it when I purchased it.

Thanks to all who responded, looks like some boost options just not FM designed. Ummmm not sure what that means no market or just not worth the potential headaches.

2.5 - for those who have pulled it off, how much of a project is it?  Ive been reading, engine height could be an issue, ecu, still need cams and head work,   and still not getting to 200hp.

Im thinking go 09 or better for stronger internals and bolt on a charger.  decisions.

WIll the ND be to the aftermarket what the NA / B are? lots of options, quality options?

Personally I like the NC design better than the Na/b/d.

How I got here, All house projects and remodeling done, kids older, 3 car garage. Was thinking lotus or alfa 4c for fun car. However I do like to tinker and always have at least 1 project in the works Neither of those fit the project mindset however they would be fun. And should I really have 35-40k in the garage for fun with 8 yrs of college bills starring me in the face. So I think down market, boxster  or 818, boxster not a fan, 818 finish sucks and to get it to a decent level Id probably be close to used lotus money. So I start thinking z3 M, interesting, hard to find one with sub 100k miles that they dont want crazy money for, plus the whole unibody tearing and structual issues kind of makes me mad.  NA/NB not my thing, NC me like, price to fit budget and still have money left for some tinkering....... Any other options?  2 seat convertible sporty,e tc...   Not a vette guy, lot of value there, but my kids laugh at old guys in vettes in my hood.

How fast do you want the car to be? A manual NC is a high-14 1/4 mile. A 2.5 swap with enough traction is probably something like a 14.3. Not a vette or a 4c or an Elise, but it's not as slow of a car as it sounds like when characterized only by its sub-200 hp number.

The thread on the Goodwin 2.5 swap made it look pretty dang easy as engine swaps go.
