I just replaced the clutch in my 96 with a new Exedy oem replacement and changed the fluid over to Motul 75W-90.

The clutch feels great and the car shifts beautifully through 1-2-3-4-5 but it's tough to get in and out of reverse.

Any ideas?

What's the condition of the clutch master & slave cylinders?

They look ok to me, it pushes about 1" which I think is enough to properly disengage the clutch.

The fluid is pretty dirty though. It's on my short list.

They tend to develop a very slow leak that requires topping up every few months or so and that might be enough to prevent full disengagement even though they appear to be working as intended.

OTOH it might just be that you need to break in the clutch and everything will be fine.

What lizard said, though my impression that the reason this works is that you're using the 2nd gear synchros to stop the input shaft so it'll slide into the (non-synchro) reverse cleanly.

I'd bleed the clutch and see if it's still stiff into reverse. Since your fluid's dirty anyhow, it's a diagnostic freebie, right?

EDIT: The unsaid thing here is that if it really is not disengaging completely for whatever reason, you're kind of abusing the synchros with the above technique.
