I am not sure which wheel & tire combo I should get for my '96 Miata with no Torsen (STS). It came with Kosei 15X7 with regular Dunlop Direzza (not the star spec) with ton of treads left. Here is my dilemma:

  1. Should I keep the Kosei and get a sticky tires for it? If so should I get Toyo R1R in 195 or 205 wide? or should I get the 205 wide Star Spec?

  2. Should I upgrade to 15X7.5 possibly the 949 wheel? If I get the 15X7.5 should I get the 225 wide Kook R-S3 or Toyo R1R? Or should I get the 205 wide Toyo R1R?

I am really confused. The main use is for fun car and some autocross and possibly track days...I am not competitive at all, probably still about 4-5 seconds from the fastest Miata...and as it sits right now the car actually is not STS legal, it came with Randall intake, aftermarket Mishimoto aluminum radiator and Momo steering wheel with no airbag...so it will take a little bit of work to make it STS legal but I figured if I am going to get new wheel and tire I might as well future proof it in case I convert it to STS legal in the near future.

Any input to solve my dilemma is appreciated. Thanks all.

have fun and use what you have now, don't worry about legal or not no one cares if you are in the back of the pack. Then when you start to get faster better driver think about some changes then...
