I'm going to have some unexpected vacation time this year so I'm looking at racing classes and rally schools, etc. I'm thinking DirtFish next year (to get some rallycross experience first, save up a little, etc.) and the Mid Ohio school this year.

So.. anyone have experience with it? Love it/hate it/worth it or not? Should I bring my own car or rent a tsx? I'll have almost zero track experience before I attend the school. (Oh, my car is a C5Z06 that I'll be autocrossing this year, but I'm nervous about tracking it yet!)

Thanks!

Haven't done the school, but I've been to HPDEs at Mid Ohio several times and it's an awesome track!

As far as your car or renting a TSX, you may be a little less saturated if you don't have to worry about your car.  However, it's a balance you need to find yourself between rental cost, cost of consumables for your car, financial risk implications should you stuff either into a wall, etc.

I have no knowledge of that particular school so I won't comment on that.  As far as the car is concerned I think that if you can afford it you're better off renting a school car.  Having someone else worry about the car will allow you to focus more on what you're there to learn and the Corvette is a lot of car for a beginner.  I think you'll learn more with a lower powered car with less traction.

Also check out https://levelupracingschool.com/

Supposedly a bunch of veterans that came out or Barber with a really good program.  Also since you have a RWD car the Miata will prob behave more similar than a TSX.

Also check out Rally Ready when it's time for a rally school. The owner is a buddy of mine and I've spent more than a little time out there.

I’ve also been interested in the class.  I’ve done track days there and it is a really fun course.

did you ever end up going to the mid-ohio school?  My wife gifted me a 3 day course for Christmas but told me I could go somewhere else if I wanted...

I did a corporate event there in September.  Their school cars were manual ILX's and they were pretty good around the track. Not super fast but good for learning because they moved around a lot on whatever 200tw tires they were wearing.  Instructors were very good; I rode along with one, it reminded me that the ILX's are capable of giving quite a bit more than I was capable of taking.

As much as I hammer "seat time seat time seat time"...

If you want to develop and hone dirt skill, you may want to do a driving school before rallycross, not after, strictly so you don't develop bad habits that you have to unlearn.

I was planning on doing the full 3 day school.  Since I don't tow my current track car to the track and live in Chicago which is beyond the AAA reset button, i'll probably use their cars.  I wonder if the corporate event was similar to the 1 day school or scaled back to accommodate the more passive audience you might find at a corporate event.

I don't plan to ever do rally cross.  I was specifically asking about the Mid-ohio 3 day school.

My understanding is that it was basically the same as the 1 day school.  I was there for a reunion of sorts, many of the guys had no performance driving experience at all. Most of the day was spent on an autocross course or using various gadgets to work on car control in a low-traction setting. We finished the day doing lead-follow behind an instructor on the main track. Even though I'm a licensed SCCA racer I still had a good time and learned a bit. All practice is good practice.

nice, that sounds like it is very similar to the one day school.  I know the one day school is the first day of the 3 day and it sounds like days 2 and 3 are more lead/follow & tuning/feedback.
