I need a new gas cap for my BMW. I don't know which one I need. It's a 99, apparently there are two based on the month of the car. One is for 4/99-7/99 and the other is 8/99+. How do I know which I need?
I checked the plate on the door, and it says my car was manufactured in 7/98. So do I just get the earlier one? No, it's not a '98 Coupe, it's a model year '99. There wasn't a '98 on my car, unless I somehow got a Euro car.

The BMW parts desk at your local dealership will be able to tell you exactly which part you need based on your VIN.

Yes, go to realoem.com and plug in your VIN, it will tell you which part to use.

It's telling me the car is a 98, and only listing the lockable gas tank. It is neither of the ones that Pelican Parts has listed for the car.
However, the illustration looks a lot more like one gas cap, than the other...

Realoem tells you the production date, not the model year. BMW is notorious for having those two numbers bear little relation to each other. My 98 328i was produced in 97.

From my experience with their motorcycles, the last 7 of the VIN will unlock the mystery. Beyond that, you need a knowledgeable Beemer parts counter.

Reminds me of the time when I had my locksmith shop, and we used to sell locking gas caps. A guy came in one day and said he had an old Chevy Vega, and wanted a locking gas cap for it.
I told him, "That sounds about right; consider it an even trade."
He was not impressed.
Right now I have a lot full of 2010 vehicles getting ready for sale. Having a car built 4 months before the model year starts is kindof normal. Most 2010 car production will end in early 2010.
Salanis, Go to the dealer.
this might be too simple- but is there a part number on the cap anywhere?
