Does anyone know if the 5 speed transmission in MINIs are interchangeable with another make of car? Or, were the guts so, but not the housing? Just looking for a cheap way to fix a MINI with a bad transmission. I know it's a longshot.

I have not heard of one.
Several have swapped the S 6-speed in. It's not a cake walk, but can be done by "normal" humans. Swap PDF Linky here
Have you done any looking for a good used? Or do you not want to install a Midlands again? You could probably pick up a used for under a grand.

I was just wondering because I found a Cooper for $3000, but the transmission is trashed. If a used tranny could be found for less than $1K, it would still be a good deal. Wasn't the first gen MINI engine developed with Chrysler in Brazil? Makes you wonder if a Neon unit might work, but it's pretty darned tight under the hood of any MINI, regular or S.
This subject has been discussed at length on the MINI forums.. Unfortunately, no.
The Tritec engine has nothing in common with any US-Chrysler product. The engine was supposed to have been used on some Euro-market Chrysler models, but it didn't work out quite as well as hoped.
Does your $3000 MINI have a busted manual or CVT? If it's a manual, that's a good price. CVT - not so much. An auto car can be converted, but it's a tedious and not-so-cheap process.
It's the 5-speed manual. I have been watching MINI prices for 3 years now, since I sold my SpecMiata . I've wondered how a MINI Cooper would do in ITB. When I spied a $3K Cooper the wheels started turning again
Not a bad price, then. If you go for it, look for a later Getrag rather than the earlier Midlands transmission.
I have no idea about its chances in ITB.
Can you swap transmissions in ITB? If so, I would put the 6 speed in it.
IIRC, the later Getrag 5 speed isn't as easy of a change as the 6 speed was, so most don't do it.
$3k is a pretty good price. You'll want to check on how "loaded" it is if you're racing. Most of the early MINI's had tons of options that would just be a pain to remove.
