I usually read it as "I stole this". I suppose you're probabaly more right more often though.
Depends on the context. "Car has been sitting 10 years in yard, lost keys" is one thing, and you assume that's a non-runner anyway. "Lost key last week car drove great before" is definitely a red flag for recent serious mechanical issues or theft. Almost any dealer will cut you a key for a newer vehicle with a VIN and registration slip in your name, so if someone can't cough up $125 for a replacement something is amiss.
