Moar Man Tranny trouble

No, this is not the sequel to my critically acclaimed straight to DVD movie....

Anyway, similar issue to the trouble another member was having with his Escort. Car gets STUUUUUCK in 5th gear. Seems to be a non-issue if I pull it out of gear while approaching a stop light (which I typically do,) but if (for whatever reason) I don't get it out of gear before I stop, it takes a frightening amount of force to get it out of 5th.

Swap oil and say a prayer? I think the book recommends 10w-40.

The title if this thread sounds dirty. I'm just sayin..

Have a look at the linkage underneath. I once jammed the linkage up with grass and such from borrowing my dads scort for a field party. Could not get it out of gear, and drove home in first gear.. Managed to catch grass up in there. I was able to clear it all before my dad needed the car returned. You probably won't be that lucky, but worth looking into.

I did a quick google search on 'Man Tranny Trouble' from what I can tell I think you probably need more lube if it's getting stuck.

Try pulling it in and out till it releases.

Sounds like a disorder which requires a liberal application of some sort of ointment that comes with a tapered applicator...

I've seen similar issues caused by a dragging clutch, either due to hydraulic issues or cable adjustment.

How does your shifter feel? Its pretty common for the shifters bushings to wear out causing some shifter alignment problems..

is the linkage binding up on anything?

Could be a problem with 5th gear syncro or shift fork wearing out.. You can access 5th gear with out pulling the transmission.. Its behind the tin cover at the back..

Just 5th. Interesting. Shifter feels normal otherwise, but I'll check the linkage and maybe play with adjustment this weekend.

probably no help to you ... just my curiosity .... when sitting/out of gear, can you then shift it into 5th and then back out again ?

So on the way in this morning, I did notice the shiFter might feel a little notchier than it once used to. Also, getting INTO 5th required a little more effort than normal a couple times. Thoughts?

I'll bet it has something to do with your motor mounts.

If linkage and mounts check out, I'd try changing oil. I've heard a lot of stories of crappy shifting that redline took care of. Lucas is good stuff too.

i'll take this one step further and say that the something is age/wear.
