Some of today's threads got me thinking (always bad). My 1990 Ford E250 might benefit from a more modern trans.
The motor is a 351W with a 4OD trans, nothing wrong with the current trans but I'm curious if one of the more modern transmissions 5-6 speed would bolt up?
If you are willing to settle for 5 speeds, it would be overall cheaper to do a bolt-on overdrive (gear vendors for example) than to swap in a newer trans unless you are getting your parts and support very cheaply. The thing is, it won't act any more modern. It will act the same with another gear on a switch (although you can use it as a gear splitter as well in certain situations). Unless you already have a very low rear gear ratio, it wouldn't improve the performance of the vehicle much without changing the rear end ratio to suit.
