Most likely.
Many young drivers make relatively small (notice relative) salaries compared to their team budgets.
Guys like Vitaly Petrov had to bring $8 mil in sponsorship money to get a seat. And some of that was personal loans taken out by his family!
F1 has been like that forever. You have your handful of top drivers making the big bucks and the others paying for their rides. At least the NASCAR ride probably pays.
I'd love to see a top NASCAR driver move to F1. Hey, Jacques Villeneuve was successful moving from CART to the F1 championship.
It's my understanding NASCAR is the best paying job in the world for a pro driver. All that sponsorship, spectator, and merch money.
I read of one example, 1 mil.salary plus half the prize money if he wins. Scaled down the farther back he finishes. This was for a spear carrier. Top drivers get much more, I am sure.
^Oh yeah, read up on the speculation over Kimi's salary from Ferrari he earned while off rallying, $25-30mil for one year or something.
Schumacher got an insane amount at Ferrari, much higher than 30 mil if I recall. It was also picked up by Marlboro. With endorsments, I think he was just south of 100 mil a year. I don't think you can approach those numbers in Nascar. You can however extend them far beyond the average life span as a top F1 driver, and I'm sure tee shirt sales, etc. can close the gap.
As much as I hate Kyle Busch, I'd like to see him drive a good F1 car. I think he's the only current driver to stand much of a chance of success right now. All the others I think that could do well are too old. Very sad.
