I'm trying to think of something Italian that's "sporty" with an inline 6 and drawing a blank. Everything I'm thinking of has a V-6. Any ideas?

the Straight Six was not very popular in Italy due to their preference for smaller cars and that nasty tax on anything over 2.0 litres.. if you want to go larger than that you might as well go v12
i6 you pretty much are looking at Germans, Japanese, and British for imports. If you want a reasonably new car you have only German and Asian chocies.
E36, E28, Supras, 190E 2.6, 240Z-280ZX, etc.
The older you look the more choices you have but the less sporty "sporty" cars become.

You forgot the Atlas inline 4, 5, and 6 cylinders in GM trucks and suvs. Wikipedia says that they stopped production in 2012, though.

well I mean sporty car not SUVs lol
I used to see this car cruising around my neighborhood a few years ago.
Sporty. Italian. Straight six. Yup...
The best in-line 6s I can thank of are the Maserati, Aston Martin and Jaguar. Only one is EYEtalian.
BTW, I do not recall Ferrari ever making an inline 6.

Bingo. The Mistral was the last, and production ended in 1970.

The 735 LM had one.
Also, you clearly left Mercedes off of your list, a most egregious mistake.

Ferrari 121LM (or perhaps other variants too...).
Once the Italians fully understood the I6 engine was deadly reliable no matter what they did to make it otherwise, the idea was quickly ushered out like a drunk Irish man out of a Broadway play.

Well it just goes to show you never get too old to learn.
I left BMW off, because.... everybody knows that.
Yes the Mercedes was a winner.
EDIT: ok they built four of the 735 LMs. I don't know how I missed that.
Big fan of the Alfa 2600 - wonderful sounding engine and pulls like a train.
Classic I-6 of all time - Jaguar.
Best I-6 of all time - possibly the Toyota 2JZ
In between, the BMW 3000 series was pretty darned good!
