The curse is so lame these days that you'll be alright. Also, there's no way in hell a car that cool will get the curse. The Subie 2.2 isn't going to be much of a barnstormer! After it completes the ToC and you recover, then you stick a WRX engine in. It would be far more likely to get the curse if you put the WRX engine in before LeMons...and be far more likely to snap axles like toothpicks. Sounds like fun, makes me want to get my bug out of the garage to test out the now fixed clutch!

Indeed post ToC I will probably look for an upgraded trans, axles and a WRX engine. Or just get the 5.0 adapter for real stupidity :)

If it makes anyone feel better about being dumb, I got caught being even dumber. Notice just how easy it would have been to put on my protection.

I was just doing a 2 inch cut, but thats no excuse.

Your voice rang in my head last night as I donned a Tyvek suit, neoprene gloves and dust mask to work on fiberglass. See...I'm learning.

Its hard to unlearn my old ways. At 14 my dad was loaning me out as shop labor to his restoration buddies so I could learn what he did not know but always wanted to. I distinctly remember my first lesson in painting. As the gun was loaded up with some good old school deadly paints and he started spraying I asked if we shouldn't have respirators. He paused to fire up another Camel and then continued spraying as he told me "can't smoke with a respirator on" I was doomed to a life of unsafe practices.

Magazine worthy.

My dad did similar stuff, mini-apprenticeships are awesome, my kid will be doing the same thing whenever he lets go of the teat.

In reply to Nashco:

A Wartburg could be almost entirely underpinned by a Corvette chassis with a V10 Viper engine and I still wouldn't vote it for the curse, cause goddamn, that took a hell of a lot of work to assemble and it just broke the badassery scale.

Despite some of the bad habits I picked up I learned so much with those old guys. Learned to do things that people just dont do anymore and how to repair cars that some people have never heard of. I wouldn't hesistate to loan my kid out to a group like that if they had the inclination to learn. Although it seems I've become that guy that people send their kids to to learn, which is cool too.

A Warburg has the same wheelbase as a C4 corvette and we found a donor for $700. It almost happened ;)

I dont have alot of fear that we would get the votes for the curse, but some people will take the BS exemption the wrong way and want to "punish" us. I think those people are in the minority in a Lemons crowd.

I said pig trough but yeah, similar idea. We're thinking maybe we'll use a smaller battery and just put it down inside there or something. The fuel cell will also be behind it so we may mount the surge tank and fuel pump in there.

That whole structure is probably overbuilt to the 10th degree but considering none of us are engineers it just seemed better to overdo it.

Holy crap...you guys aren't screwing around with that front suspension!!! Like AC said, looks like you can comfortably take a hole saw/plasma cutter to that thing.

See our other post "Bulletproof" about this being made of heat treated steel designed for armor applications. It will laugh at hole saws. I went through 10 drill bits to get the 4 holes we needed for the strut mounts :(

Not to be critical, but is the weld on that going to suffice? I always heard when dealing with steel like that to notch where the new piece was going and weld into the notch for good penetration.

Tis ok to be critical, Im a lousy welder. That is to say I can make good penetrating welds but they look terrible.

You are correct, when welding heavy gauge like this you should bevel the 2 pieces for better penetration and that was done, its just the utter ugliness of my welds disguises any of that.

Lacking any other form of testing at the moment it has officially passed the "wail on it with a 10 lb sledgehammer" test at all stages of fabrication. Not very scientific but it seems strong. One of our other teammates who is a much better welder but also down in Va will eventually be coming up to inspect and as needed, grind and reweld if he does not approve of my work.

I have inspected and pounded the welds in question and I will say that if we used a real camera and took some close ups it would look better then the grainy iphone in a dark room pics Jim posted.

Ok, here we go again, I know this is what alot of you have been waiting for. As the now defunct pontiac once said "Wider is better" That can only mean one thing....its flare time.

Started by prepping the fender. The old paint on this thing is very reactive to the resin, even with mold release applied so I've just taken to covering all the parts with tape to ensure a simpler release.

Next I laid out the glass dry, I find it helps to work in smaller pieces rather than try to wet out one large sheet.

And then I wetted it all out.

Sorry for the tease but that's all for now, need to let this "blank" cure up then I can start the flare design. The astute among us may have noticed that I glassed over a portion of the wheel opening yet neglected to glass the metal in front of the wheel opening. That's what happens when you add 12 inches to your wheelbase :)

Very Cool ... I need to be there when you lay up some glass so I can learn....

BTW on your phone there is a real good picture of where the wheels are falling these days from the fender mock up ... but it may be too blury for posting.

There is ooodles more to lay up, plenty of time. Next work weekend even if we have other things on the schedule we can do the layup on one or 2 of the parts, with some help I can get it layed up in an hour or less so we'll still have time for everything else. On that note the weekend of Feb 20 wifey is out of town, Sonic has a prior commitment but I'll be out there workin and the door is open.
