I'm trying to find a location for my power steering reservoir in my impreza. The pump is mounted very high on the engine. I'm having a dog of a time finding a place where the level of the PS reservoir will be above the highest line in the system.
But the thing is, the lines going into the PS reservoir are always below the level of the fluid. So methinks there's no way for it to drain out, since there is no way for air to enter the lines.
Any thoughts on this?
I believe the reservoir has to be equal to or higher than the pump inlet. While it may pull fluid in with it lower, the pump pressure will be lower and it may burn up the pump. Per KRC power steering tech tips:
"Fluid level in the tank must be two or more inches higher than the top of the pump"

The SVX pump is too high? It's just about even with the alternator?

I don't have the SVX pump, sadly. I have the ej22e pump which has the ridiculously tall reservoir. I've converted it to work with an external reservoir, I just need to find the reservoir that I want to use, and pick a location. I'm thinking right between the airbox and the passenger strut tower. That's the best place I can seem to find.
I started with the eg33 alone, no donor car. Next time I will start with a donor car. Hopefully one that is crashed, light on fire, and with a blown transmission so no one can get mad at me. LOL
I'd go with a manual rack until I came up with an SVX pump.
I may have one, but it's at my old house. I won't know for sure till I get down there next week.

I have access to an SVX pump, but then I would need all the power steering lines. It's a fiasco, for sure. All the ej22e stuff works great except for the power steering fluid reservoir. You can cut a relief in the hood but I'd rather not. I found that the nissan power steering pumps are identical and thus I have been able to install the external pump fitting to my ej22e pump. But trying to find a location for the reservoir is proving to be difficult.
