My Fellow GRM'ers,

I might have an opportunity to get an mp45 supercharger for my car ('03 toyota matrix) for around $1000. The catch is, the seller says it "makes noise" and "needs to be rebuilt". When i press for more details he says it sounds similar to this guy's video clip: youtube

I am thinking that the bearings in the nose cone need to be replaced and new oil for the supercharger is a must. But other than that, if the rotors are fine it should be a simple repair right?

I'm at 147whp now and this unit should drop me right on 200whp's doorstep with some very welcome torque. Only downside is its non intercooled and I live in Miami.

Comments/advice?

All i know is that I have a shelf in my garage with 3 eaton M62 superchargers on it. Each one was sold with the description "Has a little play, Just needs new bearings to be perfect" and each one has major scoring on the inside of the housing and the rotors are all dinged and scratched up like they tried to bounce off of each other a few times.

I bought them all via ebay and craigslist for under $40 each so I am not too upset about it. They looked great on the outside and who knows with new bearings they might just make some decent boost for a resaonable period of time. I will have to try one out some day.

I have an M62 on the shelf and an M90. The m62 I paid about 150 for and it is absolutely perfect.

The 90 was about 100. It is in ok shape it needs the plastic connector between the rotors and the snout replaced ($80 rebuild kit from ebay) and all is like new.

$1000 is just way to much money unless you are getting a complete bolt in kit. and even at that I would have serious reservations as I have pieced together "kits" for about half that including an inter-cooler.

The unit is a one piece cast SC housing and intake manifold. So its pretty unique. When they were new they sold for 2500-3000 with TRD piggyback ecu and all the pieces necessary. 1000 wouldnt have been too outlandish...

Nevertheless, I realized I was getting caught up in the excitement and so I took a step back and decided against it. No boost for this car. I will just have to settle for 150-ish whp on the next retune. Besides, I still get 33mpg when I behave myself!
