So I ordered a set of new staggered wheels for my '91 MR2. 17x8 front 17x9 back. I much prefer the slightly stretched look as opposed to the bulging tire sidewall. these are summer wheels only... Thinking 215/40/70 front, 235/40/17 Rear .. Recommendations on Tires and Sizing appreciated.

My favorite dd and occasional autox tires are available in those sizes, the yoko s.drive (tire rack). I use them on both the mk1 mr2 and the integra.

How about a 255 45 17 rival, it'll fit right and stick in the turns. The thought of intentionally buying tires too small is just lost on me.

That's a dramatically larger tire in regards to OD. And he'd need to be able to fit an appropriately matched size up front.

And the tires aren't too small, going to the larger end of the wheel side can help with sidewall support.

Summer street only? If so I'll say +1 for S-drives, SPTs are good too if they're available in that size.

If you're doing autocross or track time as well look at the usual EPS candidates: Z2, Rivals, RE11a, RS3...
