So what the heck is that? There is one on each side, rear of the car only. It appears to be a spacer making the springs taller...? Did I buy some idiot's kludge?

Oh, and here's the whole car, by the way:

Correct. JC Whitney spring "spacer" or height block. Someone probably had a huge pile of "worthless" stereo equipment in back and when it was done, the back was too low. Your picture looks very stinkbug-ish. And for the given amount of height cranked in, replace the springs.

Knuckle buster.......basically a spring block to increase the ride height of that spring........get rid of it asap.

Edit: If it had them on all 4 corners......I'd regret to inform you the car has had "DEM RIMZ"

I used them to compress some springs on my Dodge Shadow. It kinda worked.

Used to "jack up" the car for some reason. And I agree with Ranger50. With the fact that there is only one on one side of the spring and it has stretched the spring a lot, I would get some new springs.

See that rust bubble just upstream of the lower clamp? Impending spring fracture. Like Ranger says, replace those springs ASAP.

Excellent. Tearing the rear suspension apart. Top of my list for things I like doing on cars Please tell me there's a way to do it where I won't need to take it for an alignment.

Also, snapped a stud that holds a foglight in whilst trying to change a foglight bulb. This car should have a conversation with the Saturn wherein the Saturn discloses that I ALWAYS win and it just shouldn't fight me.

In reply to Twin_Cam:

You have to teach them that first.......I think the redline I had was one that'd been sent to the ring for testing......to do anything on it, I had to be completely drunk.....once I even sobered up and forgot how to put it back together....

Yeah, those were sometimes advertised as overloads or spring helpers. Turn the brackets over to compress spring to lower a car. Easy to undo, unless the spring is sagging which could explain why it was used in the first place.

That's probably why there's massive wheel gap!

(when you have to change the headlight bulb, do NOT throw away the little plug that goes on the back of the bulb, so the prongs make it through the rubber boot to the plug. No, I don't know why they did it that way. Yes, I do forget about it EVERY damn time I have to change the bulb...)
