What causes this?

'06 Mustang GT, stock.

This is the right rear rotor. It looks like this, all the way around. The other rotors look normal. The radial discoloration roughly corresponds with the cooling slots.

Dragging pads?

Dragging pads would be a good guess. Looks like it got REAL hot at some point!

From the discoloration, its getting hot somehow. Seeing as its the only one that does indicate that dragging pads might be likely.

Pull apart and clean/lube the sliders, reassemble and see if its still getting hotter than the others after driving. (if you have an IR gun they work well for diagnosing this)

If it continues, you may be looking at a bum caliper. Is it bad enough to want to replace it?

Traction control engage much?

I frequently see this on RWD cars with vented rotors and crappy tires.

I was just going to ask this. Iirc one of the buff books long term mustang went through a set if rear pads early because they'd run half a track day with the tc on. Also, all thing being equal, the right rear is the one that lights up first due to the torque on the axle.

those caliper suck balls for track use. if they've been hot, they're probably dragging.
