I'd look at BMW's like the 3-series convertibles or six cylinder Z3. If you can deal with a bit of mileage to get costs down , Z4's seem to be available as well.

I like Mustangs because they are cheap, durable and brutally fun. As far as 10/10 driving goes they are as close to the opposite of a Miata as you can get with the same drivetrain layout.

Stock Miata = Wind it out in eager anticipation of a curve... any curve. Pitch it into said curve with a big smile and mat the throttle from the apex out. It's a fun and willing dance partner but doesn't really have the same "staring death in the eye" thrill of flogging a car like a Mustang.

Stock Mustang = Bask in the glory of a torquey pushrod V8 with a lovely voice....until you see an approaching curve. Try desperately to scrub speed with woefully undersized brakes, then enter the curve with a strong pucker induced bite on the seat. Get ready for the inevitable twitches of oversteer from the geometrically challenged rear suspension. Gently squeeze the throttle down at the apex and let the power carry you to the outside of the road as you grin like a madman.

At least, that has been my experience.

Have you thought about a Mark VII?

Then again, since you're looking for a nice highway cruiser those faults in the brakes and suspension likely won't matter. The overall quality of a Mustang (like many have already said) will be a big step down from the Miata.

I change my vote to BMW.

Test drive a few different cars and see what you like.

I see no issue with a Fox 'Stang or Camaro / Firebird. Both are reliable, affordable, and have big aftermarkets for upgrades. You don't need to go all out, but some bracing never hurts. Swapping to a 3.27 gear from a 2.whatever will help power without killing fuel economy or the budget.
