Apparently a class action suit related to the transmissions in 2011-2019 Mustangs is moving forward.
I've got no skin in the game. I'm just interested to see what arguments are made as this moves forward.

From the Car and Driver website:
Owners of Ford Mustang and Mustang GTs with the MT82 and MT82-D4 six-speed manual transmission supplied by Getrag have filed a class-action suit against the automaker over issues with that gearbox. The suit details problems with the transmission and states that, "among other problems, the transmission slips, jerks, clashes gears, and harshly engages; has premature internal wear, increased shift efforts, inability to drive, and eventually suffers a catastrophic failure."
The suit also notes that transmission replacement does not solve the issues: "Repairing or replacing the defective parts does not resolve the Transmission Defect, because the customer is left with inherently defective parts or receives another defective part in its place."
The lawsuit claims Ford was aware the transmission had problems as far back as "at least 2010," during pre-release testing and alleges that Ford "has actively concealed the transmission defect" and "failed to disclose this defect to consumers" once it knew of the problem. The lawsuit also notes that the automaker has issued seven special service messages and technical service bulletins to dealerships related to the shifting issues and other defects.
The suit references a 2011 NHTSA investigation that found 364 complaints about shifting into gear while driving, especially in cold weather. Ford said at the time that clutch components were the root cause and made replacement clutch-pedal parts available. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation concluded, "There is no indication of loss of motive power or unreasonable safety risk associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles," and it closed the investigation.
The class-action suit is seeking $5 million in damages. It was originally filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California but has been moved to the Eastern District of Michigan.
Man, I hate seeing this as it’s one of the relatively few MT still out there.
Anyone know: Is this Getrag trans exclusive to the Mustang?
I was unaware of issues. Sad too because I think the 300hp V6 /manual trans Mustang that is rated for 30 mpg hyw would make a good/interesting commuter
This is of interest to me. I have a 2011 with 5.0 with the Getrag M82 6 speed and it's an early one. I've put close to 16K on mine since I bought it (51 K total). It can be really notchy when it's cold (below 50 F) and particularly going into 2nd. If I drive 10-15 miles or so to let it warm up it's much better and shifts great when the ambient is above 70. I may not be the ideal test case as the car is not very subtle so I try and limit my inner teenager time to "occasional", don't daily it so the cold weather thing is a choice and once it's warm I'm good. I'm not sure if the MT 82 is shared with other manufacturers.
I'd read about transmission complaints previously on various Mustang forums when I was doing my research between earlier 4.6 / 5 speed and 5.0 / 6 speed cars, lots of debate on fluid (Royal Purple and Amsoil wars for example), getting locked out of 3rd on hard 2-3 shifts and so on so I was aware of it when I bough the car. I don't remember any complaints about catastrophic failures or clutch issues just shift quality issues. Most of the people posting seemed to drive their cars a lot harder than I do (drag racing mostly) so with that as a consideration I covered the base with a 3 year extended warranty. That ended up paying for itself when the AC compressor grenaded. To Ford's credit they replaced literally every AC component in the car other than the evaporator coil ( the filter drier kept that protected) at no charge and it's been great since. I'll keep following along though.
