OK, here’s my plan for working the 2009 Big Bend Open Road Race:
Thursday: Prep the Valiant. Load cooler, chair, and shade. Tools and fluids, too, just because ….
Friday: Fuel up and ice down on the way out of town. Drive to Fort Stockton, Texas. Check out the pre-race car show. Photograph everything with wheels. Attend the courseworker meeting, get assignment. Dinner and bed.
Saturday: Head out at Oh-dark-thirty to my gate/flag station 20-30 miles from town. Watch the sun rise. Watch, video, and photograph cars racing south, then racing north. Sandwich for lunch. After the race, find drivers and workers at the park, BS, and cool off. Refuel, and head home. Grab a burger on the way.
Sunday: ID and label photos and videos. Post online. Bask in glory.
I’ll be gone 36-40 hours, and will drive about 600 miles.
Why doesn’t my wife think that’s going to be a fun weekend? Is that why she's not going with me?
I thought maybe you were going to race the Valiant
I would LOVE to have that weekend. Even more, I want to RACE that weekend. Someday.......
I thought I was doing well to get the wife to one day of autocross, but that weekend's a stretch. Although, we do routinely volunteer for course work stuff with local mountain bike and road bike races.......
Sounds like it will be a great weekend! My wife gets excited when talk'n abouut getting the ac/beatle runing again.
That sounds like a great weekend to me...
I thought I was doing well to get the wife to an autocross too. She decided she wanted to try it. Now I have four people driving one car in four different classes. She runs CSPL, I run CSP, My son runs SSM and My daughter runs SSML. I'm getting ready to put signs on the side of the trailer that say Family Affair Motorsports.
Of course the "car" budget went up... She didn't mind the $280.00 for front strut inserts if it would make her faster.

Well, that's the long, long, long term plan. While they race, I plot ...
In the meantime, I volunteer to work as a gate guard or flag man out on the course. It's the best seat that doesn't have a harness.
