After reading all of this, methinks the best answer might be to save more money and find a decent Mazdaspeed 3.
Although I have been looking at speed threes, and all of them seem beat to death like most other performance oriented cars.

My buddy had one. He never had an issue with it. My cheap 'beater' has been reliable thus far. at 200K I'd get in and drive to CA tomorrow. I love the way it builds power. It never seems out of breath, just keeps pulling, and pulling, and pulling.
That S60 R is cool. I'll go with you on the test drive.
