OK, wifey wants a car. Her son is going to buy it for her. (NICE KID!!) Budget is around 3K. Reliability is paramount, she's leaning towards Toyota, I'm thinking Saturn. I know the budget is a bit low to get super quality, but feel free to chime in. Many thanks. Da' Chuck and Jane show!

Early '90s Toyotas run forever.

This clean Tibby was the best I could find on your local CL.

She likes the look of the Tib, but would prefer an automatic. She has driven a stick most of her life, though.

You can get a nice Toyota Corolla/Geo Prizm for that price. Unbreakable.

Toyota. And if it DOES break, they aren't complex.

AE101 sedans are reliable as a rock and parts are common as dirt. AE92 sedans are a lot better-looking but parts are a lot harder to find (except powertrain stuff which is shared with the AE101) so don't fall for the good looks.

In reply to Klayfish:

Agreed. We picked up a '96 for my step-son with a quarter-million miles on it. Gave it just a bit of TLC and I think it would make it coast-to-coast if needed.

And it's actually a nice car to drive.

Yeah, any 90-'00 Corolla or rebranded corolla would be hard to beat for a reliable 3k car.

My daily appliance is a 1990 Prizm. It is pretty darn simple to keep going and going and going. I have a stick don't know that I would enjoy it as much with an auto. It's no beast but it gets along well has good AC and has only left me stranded once (broken Timing belt) I vote for early 90's toyo-geo product.
