After posting last night I watched one of his videos and he explained what he was doing. He modified the hinge area for the tailgate to make it close correctly.

Have you seen his other youtube channel?https://m.youtube.com/c/mymechanicsinsights

I believe he is in Switzerland. We will have to wait and see what color it is refinished in.

I messaged the seller - he said he doesn't believe it's the same car.

Definitely not. Mymechanics filled in the marker lights front and back and mounted a rear spoiler already. No way he would undo all of that work.

It's his personal car. He's always wanted to restore one fully.

11 hours blasting time - that's a lot of walnut shells.  The little wands used for spraying epoxy inside channels and other cavities were interesting.

I do miss his videos where he says "I make a new one".  smiley

If he actually said "we know what we're doing" I'd have to confess he truly does knows what he's doing.  Amazing!

I might be in danger of learning something new. Never have I heard of "Zinc dust primer" as a base coating before an epoxy primer.

I thought they were laying down the epoxy and was marveling on how they were shooting it a foot or more away from the surface and how thick it was going on. Then, after that coat is down they declare that epoxy is going down. Never seen or heard of this paint system.  And that spray gun...man was that thing moving volumes of material.

The guys at Retropower in the UK show a zinc metal spray process they use in their videos to rustproof the underside and in cavities that looks pretty interesting.  It appears they have a home made machine for doing it, it takes a roll of zinc wire and feeds it through a torch, which sprays the molten zinc onto the car.

I've seen a similar process that's used for building up worn surfaces - for example, a rotating shaft out of some machine is worn oval where the bearings go, so molten metal is sprayed onto the shaft to build it up and then it's turned down so it's round again, but nothing like their system for spraying large expanses of sheet metal.

So what advantage does sandblasting have on a larger scale like this? I've mostly seen sandblasting done for smaller more complex / intricate pieces that would be difficult to sand by hand.

You don't have a set of those? I thought everyone had a set of those.

It gets into all the nooks and crannies that you cannot clean and strip in the traditional manner.

It also fills every void with the blasting media and is difficult to remove. I have taken cars apart that had 20 gallons of sand hiding in the rockers from previous restorations.

He's using walnut shells in the video, is that easier to blow out afterwards?

The main thing with using walnut shells is it's gentler on the sheet metal - sand or garnet or other harsher materials are more likely to warp or distort it.  Not sure if it's easier to remove, but any left over media is going to be difficult to completely get rid of.

I had a car blasted with plastic media many years ago, and even though it was just done on the exterior painted surfaces the stuff got everywhere.  To this day, random plastic media will sift out now and then from under the dashboard or other places.

In reply to j_tso :

I have no idea.  Around here the options are sand (usually not sand but a crushed glass or aluminum oxide media), soda or dry ice.

Of the cars that come in and get torn down, it is always sand.... and it is everywhere 20 or more years after the blasting took place.

I also don't believe the "walnut won't warp panels" thing. I'd say it is "less likely to". Even soda blasting will warp a panel if done poorly enough.  I have a W113 pagoda trunk lid anyone can inspect if they say otherwise.

I wish I would have had some place to hoard rust free 240z shells around 2002-2010 when they were getting scrapped by the dozens in CA cause nobody wanted them.
