Trunk smells like gas? Check the obvious, the in-trunk lines and hoses going to the sending unit. The other thing to check is the filler connector hose between the fill pipe and the tank. They get old and crack. Real bastards to install and you really want the tank empty for that project.

From what I can tell that's an early model car, like 68 due to the front side marker lights, eurospec bumpers, later model small bump hood, but I can't figure out where those sideview mirrors are from, If I was going to modify my car, it would be to look like that, sans bumpity hood even though I really like em, there's something cool about the smooth hood and no emblem on it, I like it better on the grille personally. Also, those wheels, what are they? I really like those and if I were going to get another set I'd go that route methinks...
Yes, it's not a big deal to de-bumperette. The bumperettes have the stud in them that mounts the bumper, easy enough to get a stud or bolt and attach some sort of decorative head to it. It's been done quite a bit, you just need to find someone who did it and ask them how.
Those hideous mirrors look like JC Whitney generic domestic car mirrors. The oem Vitaloni chrome ones are the only way to fly, IMO.
The wheels, oddly enough, are probably something you could find. They are from an Alfa Alfetta, one of the very few cars that shares Fiat's dumbass bolt pattern (and the only Alfa model to do so, IIRC).

About losing the bumperettes: check the hot rod catalogs like Speedway Motors. They have chrome head bumper bolts that will fil the holes nicely.
