I found this on Craigslist and it was only five minutes from my house. I've wanted one ever since I first read about them in the Fall of 1981. I've seen photos, but I have never seen a real one in person.

Ford first sold AMF made Mustang pedal cars as a promotion at dealerships for Christmas of 1964 for $12.95. This version, also by AMF, came out the following year. The main body is the same, but the hubcaps, shifter (3 speed) and the decals are different.

They sell reproductions now, but this is the real deal. It's in remarkably good shape for a 45 year old child's toy. I'm going to leave the body and paint as is and just find replacement lights and grill.

That's awesome! I always see those, want to buy one, and hot-rod it out for the lil one.

You fit in that?! That is a really cool pedal car. There's one stuffed in the attic at my grandmother's house that I'd be trying to get my hands on if I had kids.

I had one when I was a wee little lad. Dad got it with his first Mustang. I pedaled and pushed it many a mile. Grandfather made a seat booster for me, as at the time I was too small to reach the pedals well.

Sigh, it was given away to a cousin, and his mother ran over it. Squishing it dead.

IIRC (beware the mists of time), some friends of the family had the exact same one. They had a son the same age as me (well, he's still the same age as me, just haven't seen him in a couple of decades or so...). Man I was stoked when I got to pedal that thing around.

I think there was never any doubt that I'd be a car nut, but it's possible that my presence on this board was influenced by that thing.

Neat, but I was hoping for a real one.

I had two '65s; one coupe, one fastback.

I'm done with those.

It definitely does not need an LS.

Really cool, but those tires are waaaaay too skinny for any serious autox day.

It wouldn't matter; the Honda drivers can pedal faster than you can.

The guy behind me has a whole pole-barn full of old pedal cars/planes/etc. It's pretty amazing seeing hundreds of them all stacked around in various conditions.

Those are very rare, and expensive.

No. There is a pattern that you can shift through, but it's just for fun.

If only my parents had bought me one of those. I am hopelessly a Ford guy, yet I was given a "Camaro" pedal car. No matter; I promptly drove the thing so much the rubber actually wore off the one rear wheel. I didn't quit using it until I could no longer fit in it. My folks threw it in the trash one day much to my eternal angst. Thank heaven for eBay, as I replaced it a few years ago with an identical one in original patina: It's in my man cave right across from my Dad's vintage 1939-ish Radio Flyer style wagon.
