The best I could get out of my 01'P71 was 18mpg, dead nuts reliable but a pig at the pump,..no pun intended.

One car that keeps coming in my searches are the Chevy Mailbu's? Parts shouldn't be hard to come by?..

Yes, you can probably find Malibu parts laying on the side of the road somewhere. They're the ultimate fleet/rental car, so there are a bajillion of them and a fresh supply of cheap parts.

I'll put in another vote for Prizm/Corolla. 93-97 (my preference) or 98-02.

I daily drove a '93 Prizm 1.6 5speed for a few years. Best money I ever spent, to not have to spend money. If that makes sense... It got me right around 30MPG on a 95% city commute, and would cross into the low 40's on long road trips. Failures were minimal, cheap and almost Lego simple to fix. Most new replacement parts are cheap, and U-pull yards are full of them. Only issues are that they like to rust, and can burn a little oil.

'03-'05 Mazda6i 2.3L 4 cyl & 5-speed with the sport package and Bose radio.
Not the fastest car in the world, but still pretty nice. They also have really good cloth seat interiors and decent aftermarket support.

Saturn a great option. I ran a 99 SL from 140k to 210k miles, bought for $500 sold for $400. A water pump was the only repair I made outside of standard maintenance/consumables. I wailed on it and it always returned 33-34 mpg (mine was manual transmission). The base sohc 1.9L will give you the best mpg.

Toyota Echo. 30+ MPG, and it's surprisingly fun.

This was our winner, the car performs well. Holds a corner pretty well (it does not feel like a boat) shifts well and in a timely fashion too. And plus the wife dosent mind it either.
