My Volvo is a bit noisy and i was just wondering if there are any noises in there i should be worried about. I know the fan and accessory belts are loud but there's something else. I guess i fear rod knocking but have a very untrained ear so i figured i'd see what you guys think. I could very well be worried about nothing.

I hear valve clatter (sounds just like the "singer sewing machine" sound my MG makes), bearing/belt whine, fans, a/c compressor cycling...

I don't know volvos, but to me it just sounds like the A/C compressor is a bit loud, and thats it.

Edit- now that i think of it, the a/c comp on my olds sounds just like that...

I vote lifters tapping and a bad alternator bearing.

Quick procedure for isolating a rod knock:

  • Pull the plug wires so that they're all just barely resting on the spark plugs
  • start the engine and lift each plug wire until its corresponding cylinder stops firing
  • when the knocking noise changes you've found the cylinder with the issue.
  • if the noise never changes it's probably not an issue with the rods/crank/pistons

Am I the only one that was thinking that there would be written descriptions of car noises and we had to try to name them?
