So I bought a 1994 300ZX yesterday for a song (more on that later). It's a beautiful, well documented car that I got for dirt cheap because of a misfire the PO couldn't isolate. Well, with my trusty multimeter, I found it: one of the fuel injectors isn't showing continuity. Thankfully, it is the easiest one to replace.
I'd like to get the car buttoned up and running again ASAP; the 300ZX guys seem to have an "OEM or screw you" attitude, and as much as I'd love to order an OEM injector (about $100 online), I'm in the process of moving this week so I will be waiting quite a while for the new one to come through the mail.
NAPA has the proper "new" (not reman'ed) injector in stock; two versions, a "Mileage Plus" for about $90 (slightly cheaper than OEM) and the Echlin brand for about $120 (slightly more expensive than OEM). Usually I install injectors in sets, but my other five are fine and this is a VERY difficult job on the 300ZX, so I'd really rather not throw $600 and 16 hours at this problem.
Are the NAPA injectors any good? Anyone have anything good or bad to say about them? A NAPA injector is the difference between me driving tomorrow or two weeks from now, so if they're decent, I'll go for it.
FWIW, O'Reilly also has a "BWD" brand injector in stock for $80 - appears exactly the same as the NAPA "Mileage Plus." Worth considering?
Outside of reworked racing injectors, nearly all injectors on the market are made by Bosch, Delphi, Lucas, Seimens, or Nippondenso. Most of the others you'll find are really just repackaged ones from one of these.
Echlin are, for the most part, Standard Motor Parts. They're fine. the mileage plus stuff is noteably flimsier.
The one that cost more is a repackaged OEM injector. The cheaper one is either rebuilt, which in the world of injectors means, "We washed it and put it in a bag." or its a Chinese piece of E36 M3.
Order the one from Nissan.
or do a little cross referencing and see if another common vehicle uses the same injectors and go buy the whole rail with all the injectors off a junkyard car car for $50- at least one of them is bound to be good..... injectors are a surprisingly universal part.
When I had my Z31 I replaced 3 injectors with OEM ones. They came with the car as the owner didn't want to tackle such a big job. That being said, with only a $10 difference between the cheap and OEM, I would go OEM. Even though it's in one of the spots that doesn't require the plenum be pulled.
If it can be gotten to without removing the plenum, I'd throw in a cheap one. But if the plenum ever has to come off to do all of them (and I guarantee you it will
), I'd put OEM ones in for sure.
For now junkyard / eBay a single injector to get it working and down the road replace all of them / get a complete set from some place use and send out and have rebuilt / cleaned / tested.
I have put in a few NAPA fuel injectors over the years without any issues.
