It is so much easier to make fun of Nascar when you have not been there... Never watched a lap of the race as it misted the entire time BUT the people and spectacle were just wonderful. I love the prayer, the American Anthem, Standing O for troops being recognized for their service,People camping in ridiculous camping rigs rubbing elbows with numerous corporate bigwigs, dreamy pit carts with two or more LCD screens, Playing horseshoes,GINORMOUS group parties,The way my 9 year old was treated by everyone from crew members to hospitality to well just everyone, The way people just went ahead and had fun when Skynyrd played. There was a Superbird on the track, pink pace cars, a delta wing flyover, a 65 Comet AFX with THE sickest sounding 427 ever.Free parking, shuttle busses. BTW, the drivers looked completely anorexic and I even passed within inches of Mark Martin who is my kind of Iron butt athelite. Fun.
I was at the Pepsi 400 a few years back, and I'll admit that I teared up during the fly-over.
Event cancelled till 11 a.m. tuesday

I'm biased, but it still bugs me that people put down Nascar without even giving it a shot. Yeah, it gets ridiculous sometimes with phantom debris cautions and things like that, but my favorite time is the drop of the green flag. 43 pretty, multi-colored race cars with 850+ hp all rolling into turn 1 inches apart at full throttle. If that doesn't get your heart pumping, you must be dead. TV does not do Nascar any favors. It's so much better live in person from the infield. Bonus points for tracks like Bristol and Martinsville where you are right in the middle of all the action.
I'm not sure how many people put down NASCAR just for GP .... but more for the ridiculous things they bring to the game... as you mentioned .. the phantom debris cautions... not doing anything ( that actually counts ) to actions like Kyle did to Sadler.... ( on purpose and intentional .... that's just not acceptable adult behavior ) , things like restrictor plates.... etc....
and you're right about the green flag especially at someplace like Martinsville
FWIF I still watch selected races .... the 2 road races, Martinsville ( far as I'm concerned the only worthwhile short track left ), and Darlington ... Rockingham if they come back
Standing near the fence in the first turn and having a car go by at nearly 200 mph is akin to an orgasm.
